VŠE students built a composter at the Jarov dormitory

A team of students from various universities, including two from the University of Economics in Prague (VŠE), joined a project during the summer semester as part of the Sustainable Project Management Academy, organized and supported by the organization Kokoza.
The result of their efforts is a composter installed on the Jarov dormitory campus, created with the support of the Czech Ministry of the Environment and the European Union.
The project was also implemented within the Eco Campus initiative and contributes to fulfilling the goals of VŠE’s Sustainability Strategy.

With their project “skoroVŠEkompostér,” the team won the award for the best student project within the Sustainable Project Management Academy.

Biowaste ending up in mixed municipal waste

More than 2,000 students live at the Jarov dormitory, generating a significant amount of municipal waste. A waste analysis carried out in cooperation with the company EKO-KOM revealed key data:

  • 15.7% consisted of compostable biowaste
  • 17.4% was plastic
  • In total, 54.5% of the waste did not belong in mixed municipal waste

These numbers showed a strong potential for improvement and confirmed the meaningfulness of composting directly on campus.

A practical composter and education

The students designed, built, and launched the composter themselves. It was made from wooden materials, equipped with a lockable lid, and includes informational signs with usage instructions.
At the same time, an awareness campaign was carried out among students – through social media (@skorovsekomposter) and active participation in events such as VŠEfest and Sustainia Market.

The total project cost of CZK 25,000 was fully covered by a European Union grant.
The composter is now maintained by a student team, and its operation will gradually be passed on to trained volunteers.
A final impact analysis of the project is planned for the end of 2025.
